Another Woot Submission

9th Place this time. Believe it or not, I'm kind of glad I didn't win that week, I had other things to worry about. Theme was Fairytale.

More Number dungeon art

These are from a second round of concept art done for our game 'number dungeon' game. I'm digging the weirder more stylized approach these ones have. You can see the first batch here

Drink and Draw Flier

I repurposed an existing piece for a flier for a Drink and Draw Social Club I started with a few buddys. I always loved the devil girls that seem to live only on car hoods and biker's arms.

Environment art

A quick hour and a halfish piece. I never played much with environments, but I've been enjoying it as of late. Definitely something I'd like to explore a bit more.

RYU!

These are some quick character concepts for a contest I'm entering with this guy over on the pixel count forums. The contest is to simply re-imagine a fighting game character and make a 3D model based on the design. I'm posting two images one is the concept for the concept just to see if my teammate liked the general concept. I put a bit more work into the second one but for some reason It just doesn't gel as well as the pre-concept version for me. I lost track of the energy and proportions, the more I worked on this. Definitely a hurdle I need to overcome as an artist, keeping energy and gesture.

Elf

When originally doing some concept for a work project I started with characters, but soon after decided to create screen shots for the game. I liked my initial sketches of the elf and decided to take it home and work on it a bit more. Well a bit more turned into a lot more. I like the way this came out, I feel like I came up with something I never would have come up with independently. Also I gotta say I like the way the armor came out.

The Path

I made a submission to the shirt.woot derby last week. I got 9th place my first time which was very encouraging. My subject matter kind of missed the mark for the contests voting audience but whant I lacked in concept I made up for with general design. I have a few more designs I've been working on and running by some people that seem very promising. If at first you don't succeed...

Number Game Concepts

These are some quick art tests done for a new math game project here at work. These are sort of fake screen shots of a game in development.
The general themes I was asked to explore were medieval fantasy, underwater, and space. Although I was largely uninspired by the medieval fantasy I had some cool ideas for the other two concepts. I wanted to get some elements of Jules Vern/old mens adventure magazines into the underwater and space versions. These inspirations would hopefully carry over to other elements of the project as wel User Interface, Characters, Story, etc.
I don't do much of it, but I really enjoy creature design when I sit down to do it. It's also good to be coloring again.

'Design by Committee'

It's Friday afternoon. What better time for a work place rant, or more accurately what better time to share some thoughts on collaborative design. Everyone knows the expression "Design by Committee", I recently got hit over the head by this concept when looking trough some old files at work and thought I'd share. On the left is a pirate ghost featured in "Science Pirates the Curse of Brownbeard" this character was changed several times from it's original design and was based off of an art style that was dictated by committee. This character, along with the games general art style, underwent changes and revisions for months and even years. The character on the right was made recreationally for a halloween project in about 2 hours (this included animation). I know that large scale projects require multiple designers, viewpoints, and approvals but, I have seen large scale projects fall apart when pulled into too many directions. So where is the middle ground between allowing individual expresion and meeting the needs of all in volved? Maybe some where in between these to images, hopefully skewing a bit more to the image on the right. =)

Sketchbook dump

Had a good night at my weekly drink and draw. I ended up getting some good criticism about the lack of perspective in my recent drawings. Hopefully I'll have something that addresses that up in the next week or so. In the meantime have a few sketches I scanned in from my newish sketch book.
