Unfinished #1

I originally made this blog to have a place to post work that would otherwise never see the light of day. I think that definitely applies to unfinished work.

Doodle

A quick drawing I did a long time ago in a friends sketch book. He said some people he showed his sketch book to at Comic-Con liked it. Cool.

Monsters

These are some of the 'classic' monster designs from the monster themed ATV game that I did art, design, and project management on. The monsters needed to be recognizable so there was a limit to how crazy I could get, but usually those restrictions end up being the most fun.

FANART!

Yeah... I was pretty excited when Street Fighter IV first came out.

'Dream Game' Character Concepts

Some quick concept work I did for a game avatar. The designer asked for a gender ambiguous avatar that would age through out the course of the game. I came up with these, then the game got canned before I got too much further. Same too, always thought it would be fun to animate these little guys.

Pirate concept art

Here are a few character concepts done for a Pirate cooking game. I tried to give each character unique proportions, not only in relation to actual human proportions but relative to each other as well. Working on simular projects I know that simular looking characters can begin to bore the artists working on them. I figured a healthy visual variety within a style might help keep things fresh. I don't feel like these are really very finished but I do feel like they convey a general concept fairly well.

I threw a few versions of the same character sheet by other artists in the studio behind the jump. Each Character sheet contains a Male pirate, Female Pirate, Male captain, and a Cabin girl.

Pearl Diver

Here is another project done here at work. It was fun working with new subject matter: underwater. I did most of the environments, the title screen, logo, icon, character design, and general art direction. Here is a link to the game on iTunes It's free so no excuses. The game is also getting a serious revamp in the coming weeks so check back then.

Anatomy of a Character design: ScaleO

Character Name: ScaleO (Pronounced: Scaly-O)
Use: From Sale Ella a super hero inspired animation about scale and proportion.
Description/requirements given: I was told to do a visual design for a small statured, tights wearing super villain, who is also a magic dwarf. Character is brash and nasty. Character needs to to be easy to animate and be reproducible by other artists of various skill levels.
Process:This was my first attempt at creating a character strictly out of shapes. All my previous work had been done with lines that defined everything. As far a animation went the lack of line art helped keep thing easy to animate and thus gave the animation a cleaner look. The downside would have to be that I'm not used to constructing characters out of shapes so there was a bit of a learning curb.

Character Art

These were the initial rounds of character concept art I created for 'Treadsyvania'. They're a bit rough due to the time constraints we were working with, but I ended up being fairly pleased with them. Each round features a design/treatment for a vampire, a male/female ATV ring monster hunter, and a giant mutant ant (think old horror movie).

3D textures

We don't do a lot of 3d content here in the studio but once in a while we end up needing to make something. Our 3D artist made a model and we worked on some mock ups for texturing. The would have had to be a slightly row res model so I tried to sex it up with texturing. I have pretty limited experience as far as 3D and texturing models goes but I have textured several models in my day and it's definitely something I enjoy doing.

Place Holder VS. Final Art

Place holder (with images 'borrowed' from google)
Final screen shot with my own art work.

I was looking through some old files and I found some of the EARLY EARLY EARLY prototype work done for the 'monster themed ATV safety' game. Specifically for the were-wolf boss battle. Thought people would get a kick out of comparing the place holder art from the first prototype with the final in-game art.

ATV Safety Game intro screen

This is a mock up of an intro screen I did for an ATV Safety game done here at work. Of course the real game ended up looking nothing like what I drew here. We ended up going with a more easily reproducible style, when after testing realized we needed to add a large amount of character animation to the game for reasons of comprehension. So many things get canned in the process of production it can be pretty discouraging at times. It seems that every time I look back through old concept I find these gems that never get used. The funny thing is I rarely ever look back and think that the wrong decision was made. Even if work is good sometimes it just isn't the right fit.

Car Reference

A few reference pics I did at work for our 3D artist to create a 3D model from. The two images didn't quite exactly match up (as one might imagine). Our 3D guy had to end up making a lot of creative decisions to get the model built based on just these two drawings.

Scalella Environments

A few backgrounds done for an animation here at work. My first attempt at 'cartoony' enviornments. They came out decently I'd say. here's an old animation test I did with them.

Tatoos

Buddy of mine asked me to draw two different pin ups for a sleeve tattoo...

Monkey Spy Game

Some concept art done at work for a scrapped 'Monkey Spy Math' game. A few more designs after the jump.

Pirate Halloween Game

A flying ghost captain for a co-workers Halloween project. Every year he builds a game for the kids in the neighbor hood to play. The games always have unique control schemes and are part of a larger show put on every Halloween. The game that this pirate was featured in allowed the kids to aim and fire canons at the in game baddies.

Woot submission

This was a Shirt.Woot derby submission that I did awhile back and never ended up submitting.

Lost work

After the loss of nearly every piece of digital art I've ever done, I realized that I have lots of art that never sees the light of day because I haven't deemed it 'finished'. I didn't really mind that I lost the work files themselves but what really got to me was that no one ever saw the pieces that got lost. Hopefully a lot of these 'unfinished' pieces will be able to find a home here. I'll try to think of this blog as a digital sketch book of sorts.

Getting started

Just a place for thoughts and doodles.
